Leaders are people who instinctively do the right thing; managers are people who do things right.
We often look at outstanding leaders in awe and somehow assume they always had that ability – but for the most part, this is not the case.
Leadership is a quality that can be developed over time – it is an art which can take time to learn and is unlikely to ever be a completed piece of work.
The four key characteristics are:
Inspiration – share your vision, be the champion of your own business and its future. If you can’t get passionate about your own business, don’t expect anyone else to be!
Focus – don’t prevaricate, you will lose vital time, and progress should win over perfection. Make sure you are goal-oriented – work on the big stuff and make it happen. The pace of your business will be set by you, so make sure the tempo is right.
Authenticity – you have to deeply believe and live the values of your business (which is probably an extension of who you are). There needs to be congruence between what you say and what you do, or your messages get really confused. Also, avoid stupid, egotistical games because you are the boss.
Self-Belief – this is about staying power. Being in business isn’t one long joy ride – there will be tough days and months ahead, but stay strong. As Henry Ford said ‘Whether you think you can, or think you can’t. You’re right.
