A client recently used our Property Tax Specialists to have his freehold property assessed to see if there were any unclaimed Capital Allowances – and was he in for a big surprise!
The value of the Allowances to be claimed reduced his tax bill by enough for him to pay for his new Audi R8.
Capital Allowances exist to help businesses invest in the plant, machinery and equipment necessary to help them grow.
Last year, the chancellor increased the amount that can be offset in one year to an all-time high of £500,000. This means that Capital Allowances are a proven and legitimate way to save tax.
With Capital Allowances having the ability to reduce tax bills, but not profit, many dentists have already benefited from this service.
If you own a commercial freehold property, the unclaimed Allowances are commonly between 20-30% of the value of the property. So, if you bought your freehold for £500,000, there could be unclaimed Allowances of £100,000 to £150,000 waiting to be claimed and offset against your tax bill.
Most clients assume their accountant has already dealt with this, but for the majority, this is not the case. Put simply, unless you have had someone visit and inspect your property, you will not have been able to make a claim.
